Spotlight: Cait Miers

How would you describe your style of photography?

My style is pretty natural, full of moments in between. It’s spontaneous, colourful and an ode to the brighter times in life. 

How did your style develop?

I think I knew early on what I wanted to capture and how, but it was another mission in itself to then translate that into action. I used to get frustrated because I’d try so hard to create certain things, but as soon as I kinda let go of that and just let the creating do itself, I think that’s when my style truly came through. 

Tell us about your first major breakthrough within the industry.

I shot a Roxy content trip in Bali when I was 22 (I’m now 26). I was living there at the time and a dear friend and work colleague recommended me to Roxy for the gig. They were super keen to have me and I couldn’t believe it, it was my dream come true. From that I went on to shoot at least 5 surf and lifestyle content trips with them and subsequent events with team riders, which I’m still doing today. It’s blossomed into an amazing relationship and I pinch myself every day I get to freelance with such an amazing company that does so much for women’s surfing. 

What are a few important things you have learned being a photographer?

You need to believe in yourself, and be confident in your work. I started doing that very early on and I’m grateful for it. You have to walk into shoots believing in your ability to create something magic for your client. Photography has taught me a great deal of resilience, because not everyone is going to like what you do. As soon as you learn to focus on what you are creating, and pour your energy into that, I think that’s when you can really do your best work. 

What inspires your work?

Magazines. I’ve been drawn to print for a very long time and always get super inspired just spending an hour or two with a coffee going through magazine after magazine and seeing what other people can create. It gives me ideas and gets me back on path. Also just ‘doing,’ rather than mulling over things for a while. That’s how I’ve always approached my work, and I get inspired by others doing that too. 

Name two photographers we should be following and why?

Serena Lutton @serenalutton- Honestly my favourite photographer. I love the way she shoots surfing in such an elegant way, but also incorporates style and fashion into the mix. 

Alana Spender @coconutcomradery - Her detail is insane, there’s just something about her images I’m so drawn too. 

And videographer Roxy Facer @roxface - She’s changing the way surfing is being videoed for women and it’s mental! Such elegance.
