How to set up a 5 ft Octabox

The Octabox is a great soft light dome for portraits, headshots, fashion, and more. It’s a very large light source that will intensify its shape the slower to the subject you bring it. It is adjustable in size, however, we mostly use it at 5ft. Adjust the diffusion to suit your shoot with the light dome including 1.5 and 2.5 stop diffusion options to change the density of light.

It is very easy to set up and can be assembled in moments. The 45-degree fabric light control means that you can control the direction of the source of light too.

Step one: Unpack the Octabox from the bag

Separate out the pieces so that you can see the black box and then the metre.

Step two: Open it up

Place the white shade facing the ground and open out the yellow springs like an upside-down umbrella.

Step three: Place the speed ring into the centre opening.

While the box is facing down, place the speed ring into the centre opening.

Step four: Connect the light to the speed ring

The light should fit straight onto the speed ring that you have just placed into the centre opening. You will need to twist it until it is firmly connected.

Step five: Your Octabox is ready to go!

From here, set it onto the stand and connect to power ready to shoot.
